The team leader at HWH assessed the situation and realized that not only was WCG virtually unknown as a major event, but eSports, in general, were also not considered worthy of coverage by most national sports and games writers. HWH assembled a dedicated team and decided to build “a pyramid of believers,” by finding inspirational, compelling local WCG heroes at the local U.S. qualifying events, which the team pitched to local media outlets. The individual stories were so unique and powerful, they began to generate national media attention – at least enough attention to get a few major editors interested in the WCG Finals.
As the Finals approached, after creating some homegrown U.S. WCG player-favorites, HWH added some critical messaging and worked on positioning the all-important WCG Championship Finals. First the team made sure that watching the final competition would be even more exciting than even reading the personal stories about the local trials. The accomplished this by setting up a unique press environment at the event, where the press would be able to see things that the participants and even some of the announcers couldn't see. This moved the story from the personal, local level to an exciting international sporting event. HWH had plenty of staff on hand to deconstruct and explain the eight events and made the competitors available for interviews. Finally, the team put the event into perspective with detailed information about prize money and sponsorship opportunities available to WCG winners!
